all band family potluck - august 30th

August 30th is the annual all band family potluck.  This is an important event for parents and students to come together, meet new members and gain some information about the upcoming year.

When:  Monday August 30th

Time:  7pm

Where:  ARHS Commons - this is a new change for this year!

What to bring:  Your assigned food item based on your class to share.  Every family must provide their own plates, utensils and beverages for your family. 

Freshmen Boys:  Chips/Dips

Freshmen Girls:  Salad

Sophomores:  Dessert

Juniors:  Main Dish

Seniors:  Main Dish

Band is both an academic class as well as a club.

Student academic expectations are high.  Not only are students expected to achieve high grades in the band program, but they are expected to keep up in their core classes and maintain a high GPA.                                                                                             The average band student GPA at ARHS for 2010 is 3.7!

Jazz Band

If you are interested in being in Jazz Band for 2010-2011, auditions will be held during the 2nd week of school in September.  The only instruments in Jazz Band will be traditional jazz instruments:

Sax

Trumpet

Trombone

Piano

String Bass

Drums*

Vibes*

*All percussionists will also learn jazz piano for combos.  This will be essential in your jazz education.

Percussion class

If you are signed up for the 2010-2011 Percussion Class, please make sure you have the following items ready for the first day of school:

-  Stick Bag

-  Concert Snare Sticks (I recommend Vic Firth)

-  Practice Snare Pad (I recommend a Remo Tuned-Practice Pad)

Percussionists who wish to be serious about their music education and future will also include the following:

-  Yarn Mallets for marimba

-  Timpani Mallets

-  Plastic Mallets for xylophone

-  Triangle Beater

 

Symphonic Band

Symphonic Band - this band is offered to any band student.  The symphonic band rehearses daily in class and performs in 3 concerts a year as well as in our regional band contest.  The symphonic band students are also split into chamber groups to perform in the january chamber music concert.

Symphonic Band Curriculum will focus on wind instrument fundamentals including (but not limited to); tone production, blending, balancing, individual and group tuning, articulation, rhythm reading, basic music theory, performance preparation, pratice habits, etc.

Symphonic Band students are expected to attend all scheduled performances.  Band is a group activity, we need everyone present to succeed to our full potential. 

Wind ensemble

Wind Ensemble - Students are accepted into wind ensemble by audition only.  The wind ensemble is considered an AP band class.  This band rehearses every day during class and students are expected to maintain a consistent practice routine outside of school.  Private lessons are crucial for students in the wind ensemble.  The wind ensemble performs in 5 concerts during the year as well as in our regional band contest and local university band festivals.  The students in the wind ensemble are also split into chamber groups for our january chamber music concert and are highly encouraged to perform at solo and ensemble contest.   

Wind Ensemble Curriculum will focus on continuiing wind instrument fundamentals including (but not limited to); tone production, blending, balancing, individual and group tuning, articulation, rhythm reading, basic music theory, performance preparation, pratice habits, etc.

Wind Ensemble students are expected to attend all scheduled performances.  Band is a group activity, we need everyone present to succeed to our full potential.  As an audition-only band, it is expected that performance is a top priority for all Wind Ensemble members. 

Marching band

Every Monday, Wednesday from 6:30-8:30pm.  We will begin August 2nd and end November 6th with the Veteran's Day Parade and our field show exhibition.

Marching Band is an activity that promotes healthy physical exercise as well as balance between what is art and what is athletic.  Marching Band strengthens your breathing muscles and posture.  This activity is a great way to build endurance both physically and musically.
